It is very difficult for students to juggle all the deadlines so your due date Michelle is fair on them but possibly not on you.

Helga's idea of being "up
front" about negotiating deadlines is fair as well.

As sarah says deadlines are needed when entry into courses depends on completion of other courses.

I guess my philosophy is "rules are made to be broken" Michelle, which does not make me popular with the policy-makers, and the people who try to keep the organisation compliant.

What should be done with unruly teachers who want to provide flexibility for their students?Bronwyn hegartyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12032750297040394983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24006499.post-1950116598590746882008-05-23T21:09:00.000+12:002008-05-23T21:09:00.000+12:00It all depends in what situation you are in. In those circumstances you can have tighter deadlines.
Some people get motivated by deadlines and if they are not fixed there is a risk that student perform less than they could.

But on the other side I appreciate that we have flexibility in our course (although the finish line is still the same).

If you are flexible in your programme you should make it clear in the beginning. I think it is not 'fair' if some people do everything they can to complete the assignment in time, only to find out afterwards that they could have negotiated some extra time.Helgahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/14975171848160997827noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24006499.post-19281864924168632682008-05-23T12:49:00.000+12:002008-05-23T12:49:00.000+12:00Assessment deadlines are part of the learning disc...Assessment deadlines are part of the learning discipline, by setting such deadlines, it has advantages and also disadvantages, we shall look at the both sides of the coin. For those students who are not familiar with the education setting, they might see deadlines as a ticking bomb, they feel under pressure and wouldn’t necessarily perform well in the assessment. My suggestion is, give the 1st year students more flexibility than others. As the years goes on, senior students should be able to take on the pressure and have been improving their time management and problem solving skills.

Secondly, I can’t image any country without rules or regulations. But as the “rule makers” in the course, we need to be reasonable. My students have a 25% project; I made the due date the very last day of the semester to avoid them having the same deadlines with other subjects. I know it will be awkward for me, because I don’t leave myself a lot of time for marking, but I would like my students to be as stress free and hoping they can achieve better. Nevertheless, I have made myself very clear, students are welcome to make earlier submission, but because the due date is the very last day of the semester, no later submission is allowed, this can avoid the unfairness to others of extensions that may have been given.

DFLP course gives us the flexibility that we need. From looking at the Google reader, some of us have fallen behind the schedule, but as there is no deadline for the posting, people can gradually catch up. But I realize that, people who post their postings later, no one tends to look at them, maybe consider that as the “silent penalty”.Michelle Liuhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02220358919171002363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24006499.post-9878039438900964772008-05-19T12:04:00.000+12:002008-05-19T12:04:00.000+12:00Good questions about flexibility of assignments. I...Good questions about flexibility of assignments. I have been studying at post registration level for 16 years and I have never once stuck to an assignment date yet. And I have always appreciated teachers giving me flexibility. But...in a tight-framed undergraduate program, I am not sure if we have the luxury of doing that. In the program I teach in, there are many pre-requisites that have to be passed before the student can go onto the next level. Also, there are times frames set up by external bodies ie you have to complete midwifery program in 4 years. But the short course I run for midwives which is done on a one-to-one basis and led by midwives' needs has a 6 month time frame but I accept assignments whenever they come. But if it was a big work load I would be less flexible. As teachers, we have to plan our work as well.Sarah Stewarthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/00480597227427423793noreply@blogger.com
