It is not individuals like you and Leigh (and others with similar roles) but society at large that decides which direction things head in the future. Some people feel the urge to join in sooner than others, but we all get swept along eventually. While working in the area of change management within several organisations, I tried to get people to see that they could enjoy more control, freedom, and opportunities if they were on top of the wave, rather than being tossed around in the breakers. I think the best way to get people onside is, as you have already said, identifying the peer network and finding where they are at and what matters to them. This network may be one group or an overlap of different groups and it could be within or outside the organisation or more likely both, given that computer technology has become as much a social technology as a business one. An example is my mother-in-law who would never have considered having a computer in the past and has never typed even. She is now considering getting one. She used to consider that this technology is for her children and not for her, but now that people seem to be less scared about giving out their credit card number etc. to shop on the internet then the whole thing is suddenly quite attractive. She loves to shop and I have been saying for years that shopping online was great. She didn't take any notice. What I guess has happened is that someone(s) she identifies with has overcome the mental/skill barriers and is having a great old time shopping online etc. and now she wants it too. The best thing would be encourage people to talk and share their experiences good and bad, because this brings it into the normal and everday sphere within which most people opperate most of the time. Blogging is, in my view, a great tool for doing this.

Traceytraceyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01814477385638278670noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24006499.post-13556558941020177052009-05-18T21:16:00.000+12:002009-05-18T21:16:00.000+12:00good points Tracey. Your response certainly highlights the need for some "people whisperers" to help those who are uncertain or not happy with the changes brought about by technology and economics. I have found that when colleagues help each other and when teachers can see the benefits of a new approach for their students' learning, they get very motivated to "get on the float". So it is about finding the right balance for people and treating them with respect as you say. Too much push and shove will be a real turn off for many. what would you say was a good way to get people onside?Bronwyn hegartyhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/12032750297040394983noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-24006499.post-37362202350762215692009-05-18T00:49:00.000+12:002009-05-18T00:49:00.000+12:00Hi Bronwyn
Yes I can related to your horse float ...Hi Bronwyn

Yes I can related to your horse float analogy, having some very horsey people in my family! However, people are not horses and we can expect a little more from each other than from "non-thinking" creatures like horses. What we do share with horses though is an innate sense of knowing that this might not be good for us. I guess in some cases the movement towards technology and more flexible and open approaches in learning might be not the best for some individuals on a personal level. The employer has a duty to provide support for these people in a fair way that neither compromises the goals of the organisation, nor adds to the fear.traceyshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01814477385638278670noreply@blogger.com
